About the Play:

Steven Dietz’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’sDracula premiered in 1995. The play is an exciting, dramatic, fast movingevening of theatre. Dietz remains more faithful to the original than manyadapters, while still streamlining the action and compressing several of thenovel’s characters and key actions. Dietz writes that the characters – and byextension, the audience – must “take the power and terror of Dracula seriously.”

Characters:

Mina – a woman in her early twenties, engaged to Harker at the beginning of the play.  She is middle class, studying to be a stenographer.  She and Lucy were childhoodfriends.  More reserved than Lucy, Mina’s whole character begins to change after she falls under Dracula’s influence – in one scene, she eagerly drinks Dracula’s blood from a wound in his chest.

Lucy – a woman in her early twenties, she has three suitors for her hand in marriage, including Seward.  She is upper class, but still considers Mina her best friend.  At thebeginning of the play, she is already under Dracula’s influence.  She is more emotional and physical than Mina.  Later in the play, we see her transformed into ‘the undead.’

Harker – 20’s –30’s, he is a solicitor who has been sent to Transylvania to meet with Dracula about the purchase of a home in England.  He is a ‘man of action’ but he is incapable of resisting Dracula’s influence.  After his convalescence and returnto England, he joins forces with the other men and with Mina to combat Dracula.

Seward – 20’s –30’s, one of Lucy’s suitors, he is the head of a lunatic asylum.  He is especially drawn to study one of the patients, Renfield.  After being rejectedby Lucy, he pledges to assist her in any way he can if she should ever be in danger.  He is a former student of Van Helsing’s, and after Lucy’s death, he joins forces with him to combat Dracula.

Renfield –indeterminate or middle age, he is a madman at Seward’s asylum.  He is already under Dracula’s influence at the beginning of the play.  He eats flies, spiders, birds and desires a kitten.  In some scenes, he is almost sane and realizes the peril from Dracula, at other times, he lashes out in violent outbursts.

Van Helsing –middle age, by turns domineering or fatherly, he is a professor and Seward’s former teacher.  Seward once saved his life. He is called upon by Seward to help diagnose Lucy’s illness and immediately suspects the real cause.  Little by little, he reveals what he knows to the others and forms a pact with them to defeat Dracula.

Dracula – ageless, a Count from Transylvania, he appears old and weak when he meets with Harker at his castle, but in other scenes, his youthful health and vigor has been restored.  He is charismatic and exerts a sensual appeal for both Lucy and Mina.  In one scene, he opens a wound in his bare chest so that Mina can drink his blood.

Additional actors to play the following roles:

Lucy’s Maid

Two attendants at the asylum

Waiters attending to Renfield

Vixens – female vampires at Dracula’scastle
