Christina Calvit’s play is a faithful adaptation of Austen’s novel, tracing the back and forth courtship of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Calvit’s version originally premiered in 1986 at Chicago’s Lifeline Theatre, and the production won several Joseph Jefferson Awards including one for New Adaptation. In the story, Mrs. Bennet is determined that one of her five daughters should marry the handsome Mr. Bingley or the wealthy Mr. Darcy. Mr. Bingley quickly falls in love with Mrs. Bennet’s eldest daughter, Jane. But everyone in the small town of Meryton, including Elizabeth, is disgusted by Mr. Darcy’s pride.

“Pride and Prejudice” is the first play of GreenMan Theatre’s sixth season. The 2009-2010 season continues with GreenMan’s musical-murder-mystery dinner theatre production, opening February 19 for two weekends at Angelo’s Ristorante in Elmhurst. The final play is Woody Allen’s hilarious comedy “Don’t Drink the Water,” which will open April 16 and run for three weekends at the First United Methodist Church.
