"How the West Was Done In" is an interactive style of theatre played in the round that allows the audience to get in on the fun. These annual musical comedy dinner theatre productions are always a hit, and “How the West Was Done In” played to near capacity crowds during its opening weekend. The Saturday Feb. 25 show is already sold out, but some prime seating still remains for the Friday and Sunday performances.

“How the West Was Done In” is a spoof on classic westerns such as “High Noon,” “Destry Rides Again,” “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” “True Grit,” and “Blazing Saddles” as well as the 1960’s and Hollywood. Audience members can dress up as “extras” in western garb or 60’s clothing because the play deals with a cast and crew rehearsing scenes for their current western film. Jealous and egotistical actors clash with each other as the frazzled crew tries to keep the film rolling. A hippie couple from England wanders onto the set, and if that wasn’t enough pandemonium, someone ends up dead. As everyone accuses one another, the audience will have the opportunity to fill out a form on who they think committed the crime. For those who guess correctly, there will be a drawing and the grand prize includes tickets to GreenMan’s spring production “The Matchmaker” as well as tickets to an Elmhurst Choral Union concert and one of Elmhurst College’s spring productions. The audience members who dress up for the evening could also win a prize for most creative costume. You do not have to dress up to attend the production.

"How the West Was Done In" performances are held in the banquet room at Angelo's Ristorante at 247 N. York in Elmhurst. Doors open an hour before showtime for a cash bar as the characters mingle with the audience. Advance reservations are required and can be made here on our website or by calling 630-464-2646. The fee of $50 includes the show, a full course family style meal, and parking. This production is GreenMan Theatre's annual fundraiser and allows them to continue producing plays and offering theatre education to the local community.
